As mentioned, the Marathon open play week is a day away, beginning on June 2, 2026, and ending on June 9, 2026. This week-long free period means you and your friends can try Marathon for free, and you won’t get restricted either. The open play week isn’t a trial period that only allows you to play a certain way; it’s there to let you play the full game.

Meaning that when the Marathon open play week releases, anyone can join in on the chaotic fun and beauty that is Marathon. But what is the fun with Marathon exactly, and what can you do in the game that many in the gaming space have been talking about? Well, I’ll give you a short rundown of what Marathon is and what you can expect from it.

What Is Marathon’s Story?

Marathon is a hero-based PvPvE survival “horror” extraction sci-fi FPS created by the masterminds behind the Halo and Destiny series. The world of Marathon sees you infiltrating Tau Ceti IV to figure out what happened to Earth’s colony ship, the Marathon. But it isn’t going to be easy, as the UESC (Unified Earth Space Council) isn’t happy you’re there.

You may have noticed that I put horror in quotation marks, and that’s because something else isn’t happy that you’re there, the planet. The humans sent there are gone, but their voices echo through the warped realities on the planet’s surface. While what you hear may be harmless, what you see skulking in the dark sure isn’t.

While that is a pretty vague explanation of the story of Marathon, it’s best to experience it for yourself, as it’s bustling with environmental story. Though its gameplay is just as good, in my personal opinion, it might be the best in its market. I gave a quick rundown of Marathon’s genre, but let’s dive a little deeper into Marathon’s gameplay.

What Is Marathon’s Gameplay?

You play as a Runner in Marathon, a mercenary who’s given up their physical forms for cybernetic Shells with inhuman powers. Companies, often referred to as Factions, will task you with recovering their investments in the Marathon. But before you do, you must build your loadout to combat the various hostiles on Tau Ceti IV.

Your loadout consists of a myriad of weapons, throwables, shields, Shell upgrades, body upgrades, and much, much more. But since it’s an extraction shooter, everything you bring in isn’t owned by you the moment you slip up; you can lose everything. Many of you know what an extraction shooter has in store, but for those who don’t, get ready to lose everything.

You can expect many tense moments in the Marathon open play week when engaging against other player Runners, or even with the various AI enemies. Though you could play like a Shift+W Chad, remember, you have your team and the enemy has theirs. However, that’s if you play with a team, because you can play as a solo instead of as a trio.

Is That All For The Marathon Open Play Week?

The Marathon open play week also begins with the release of Marathon’s second Season, and you get to experience it with everyone. Anyone who participates gets to experience a fresh start alongside everyone who plays the new Season. So tell your friends who are interested in the game, or tell the friends who you want to play with.

Regardless, I’m excited to see new blood out in the field, whether that be through my scope or through the matchmaking screen. So until then, remember that you will die, and prepare for the time of your lives!
