The new Marathon Runner Shell, Sentinel, arrives with the release of Marathon Season 2: Nightfall, which is less than a day away. Sentinel arrives beside a massive list of content that everyone can try out, thanks to the Marathon open play week. But we aren’t here to list out the new content or talk about the open play week; we’re here for the new Shell.
The upcoming Marathon Runner Shell, Sentinel, is the first defensive Runner Shell coming to Marathon. And that becomes more obvious when you analyze their abilities and what they can do in a tight environment, such as a building. Though if it isn’t obvious, which I don’t blame you for, then let’s analyze the new Shell together and see what they’re about.
The Kit Of The Marathon Runner Shell, Sentinel

While the new Marathon Runner Shell, Sentinel, doesn’t look all too powerful or imposing, that’s where they get you. The moment you step into the domain of a good Sentinel, you may as well kiss your bag of goodies goodbye, because you’re already dead. Though let’s not get ahead of ourselves, we have to start with their abilities first.
Sentinel’s Prime Ability: Defender System
The prime ability of the new Marathon Runner Shell, Sentinel, is the Defender System. The Defender System is essentially an APS (Active Protection System), which many gamers may recognize from other games. You may recognize this type of system from titles such as Call of Duty, Siege X, Battlefield, and War Thunder.
The Defender System will intercept any incoming explosives thrown by Runners or UESC forces in a small area. You and your allies also gain increased weapon stability and reload speed when standing near the Defender System. However, it doesn’t have infinite ammo, so don’t assume that you’re safe from explosives forever.
Sentinel’s Tactical Ability: Snare Mine
While Sentinel’s prime ability protects them and their team, Sentinel’s tactical ability sets them up for a kill. The tactical ability is a proximity-triggered snare mine that Sentinel throws out that can stick to most surfaces. When an enemy steps within its range, the mine detonates into several submunitions that inflict the immobilizing status.
Once an enemy hears the dreaded sound of the snare mine’s detonation, it won’t take long for Sentinel to pounce. And by the time you get your bearings after the snare mine’s explosion, it’s already too late, as Sentinel, their squad, and their family lineage are right on top of you. Of course, you can avoid this by being cautious when you know a Sentinel is around.
Sentinel’s Trait Ability: Prey Tracker
Even without their snare mines or APS, the new Marathon Runner Shell, Sentinel, is still a vicious threat. And that’s because of their trail ability, Prey Tracker, which enables a motion-tracking system in their HUD. This motion-tracking system allows them to see moving enemies on a radar within a conical zone in front of them.
With Prey Tracker, not even a cloaked Assassin is safe from Sentinel, that is, if they move around. So, not only can Sentinel lock down a location, but they can find you no matter where you are in said location, so keep your wits up, or else. With that said, Prey Tracker has a limited cone of vision, so flanking is a good idea to counter Sentinel.
Sentinel’s Passive Ability: Castle Doctrine
The final ability of the new Marathon Runner Shell, Sentinel, is the passive ability, Castle Doctrine. With Castle Doctrine, Sentinel readies and reloads close-quarters weapons more quickly based on the number of nearby hostiles. Not only that, but their Hardware, Firewall, and Self-Repair Speed are increased for a short time when taking splash damage.
Close-quarters weapons include SMGs, pistols, and shotguns, but that doesn’t mean you have to use them to excel as Sentinel. With this passive ability, Sentinel can make any building feel like a nightmare to fight in, but it certainly won’t be impossible. The Shells of Marathon are amazing, but they won’t fulfill everything, so use your favorite Shells wisely.
Is that All For The New Marathon Runner Shell, Sentinel?

For right now, that is indeed all for the new Marathon Runner Shell, Sentinel, though we do have a tiny taste of something else. Bungie has given us a small taste of the Runner Cores for Sentinel; the small taste in question features three Cores. The listed Cores are only three of the 10 that we’ll have to find when Season 2 arrives.
The three Runner Cores for Sentinel are as follows:
- Reversal (Enhanced): Defeating an Immobilized target heals you over time.
- Wellness Beacon (Deluxe): While standing near your Defender System, you and your allies use medical items more quickly.
- Eminent Domain (Prestige): Runner grenades neutralized by your Defender System fall to the floor and become lootable.
Other than the mentioned Runner Cores, this is indeed all we have on the upcoming Marathon Runner Shell, Sentinel. But there will be much more soon, as Season 2 releases in a few hours, so you won’t have to wait too long to discover Sentinel. Not only that, but the open play week also releases at the same time, and you can drag your friends along for the fun.
Until then, practice those grounding techniques with your appointed AI and get ready for another Season of non-stop fun!
