Marathon Season 2: Nightfall is less than a week away, and we already know what’s coming on June 2, 2026. The next Season of Marathon features a colossal list of changes and additions for players to experience. Its mammoth-like size surprised many players, including me, and best of all, none of it is filler.

The list of content for Marathon Season 2: Nightfall features changes and additions that touch on almost every aspect of the game. That includes progression, player characters, the player’s inventory, and an obnoxiously long list of more. But enough beating around the bush, let’s look at what Season 2 has in store for us before I explode with excitement.

The Contents Of Marathon Season 2: Nightfall

The contents of Marathon Season 2: Nightfall feature a staggeringly large list, but I’ll try my best to make it easy to understand. I’ll break up the massive list of content into two categories: Player gameplay and system gameplay. Player gameplay means that you directly equip and use it, while system gameplay means that it functions with or without your input.

Player Gameplay

The New Runner Shell

What better way to start us off with the contents of Marathon Season 2: Nightfall than the new Shell in the player gameplay category? And that new Runner Shell is none other than Sentinel, the newest defensive Shell in the playable roster. It shouldn’t come as a surprise either that Sentinel comes with some new toys, as they contain a unique kit, like other Shells.

Sentinel excels at locking down defensive positions, like buildings and positions with good cover, and CQB. Sentinel punishes those who wish to flush out Sentinel and their team with throwables, and those who wish to mindlessly shotgun rush. Not only can Sentinel lock down a position, but they’re also an expert with close-quarters weapons.

Unfortunately, I’ll be summing up the contents of Marathon Season 2: Nightfall, so some things are going to be vague. However, if you’d like a deeper breakdown of Sentinel and other features, then stick around. With that in mind, let’s move on to the next set of player gameplay elements, the new weapons.

The New Weapons and Mod

Among the new toys of Marathon Season 2: Nightfall are the new weapons, coming to an armory near you. The two new weapons in question are the KKV-9SD and the D54 Battle Pistol, an update to a class relic and a brand new weapon, respectively. And I may be a bit biased, but I think we should start with the KKV-9SD first, as it just looks so cool.

The KKV-9SD

The KKV-9SD is an updated version of the classic KKV-7 from Marathon Infinity, which originally debuted in 1996. The KKV-9SD is a pistol-frame SMG with an integrated suppressor that fires at blistering speeds, similar to its predecessor. But unlike its predecessor, it fires in full auto, allowing you to fire at 1200 RPM without interruption.

Its coolness factor doesn’t end there, either, as it comes with a built-in folding-stock mod. If you like to fire your weapons from the hip, then fold the built-in stock to buff anything related to hipfiring. Or, if you’re more inclined to ADS your weapon before firing, you can unfold the stock for benefits to anything related to ADSing.

The D54 Battle Pistol

Up next is the D54 Battle Pistol, a full-auto pistol that fires in three-round bursts with a foldable stock. The D54 arrives as the perfect companion for those who can’t let go of sniper rifles and other long-range weapons. It also features a foldable stock that you can fold and unfold, akin to the KKV-9SD.

The New Rarities, Chips, and Implants

Rarities

Marathon Season 2: Nightfall features a whole list of changes for the various weapon rarities in the game. The developers stated that they intend this to allow players to run into previously mythic weapons, because has anyone seen the Copperhead RF in Season 1? The developers hope that this change shakes up the meta a bit.

And if it doesn’t shake up the meta too much, this change still allows those hidden weapons to have the limelight. If this change works as intended, then we can see the Copperhead RF, Impact HAR, V99 Channel Rifle, and various other weapons more often. I bet that some of you haven’t even seen at least one of the listed weapons in the field once before the release of Marathon Season 2: Nightfall.

Chips

Marathon Season 2: Nightfall introduces some new weapon chips into the loot pool, among the numerous other inclusions. Eight chips will arrive with Season 2, with three of them being made public by Bungie themselves. The three revealed weapon chips coming to Season 2 are as follows:

  • The Brain Freeze Chip: Precision downs and kills with this weapon create a small explosion that spreads Frost to nearby hostiles.
  • The Alarmist Chip: Projectile impacts play a proximity drone alert sound cue after aiming down sights for a brief moment.
  • The Scrapyard Chip: Defeating hostiles with this weapon has a chance to spawn depleted heal items or standard materials.
Implants

Implants are receiving a massive change upon the release of Marathon Season 2: Nightfall, similar to the change made to weapon rarities. Bungie noticed that it was frustrating and confusing to differentiate the massive volume of implants at a glance. Implants were named based on their stats, with a random perk attached, but the perks were what truly mattered.

Knowing that, Bungie has changed how implants work in Marathon Season 2: Nightfall by focusing on perks rather than stats. What that means is that implants are now named after their perks, so that players can identify them at a glance. In addition to this massive change, several implants will now receive various balancing and rarity changes.

System Gameplay

The New Map

While not a completely new map, Night Dire Marsh, colloquially known as Narsh, may as well be. Narsh brings a new level of challenge to the already difficult and deadly landscape of Tau Ceti IV; it also brings a new level of horror. However, with great risk comes great reward, but you can’t stroll in and take what isn’t yours.

The UESC is tired of the Runners, so they’ve prepared plenty of supplies around Narsh, and that means opportunity. While the supplies of the UESC are completely locked down, that doesn’t mean that a sneaky Runner can’t snag a key or two. And that’s exactly how you’ll gain access to these locked-down supplies.

Similar to how you gain access to various things in Outpost, you must gain access certifications from terminals around the area. After gathering these certs, short for certifications, you can make your way to the locked-down areas and break in. However, it’s the UESC; they’re going to give you a hard time getting in and getting out, so prepare for a fight.

But it’s not that easy to access these locations, because dangers also lurk in the darkness of Narsh, and it isn’t the UESC. The paranormal activities of Dire Marsh get turned up to 11 when the sun sets in Marathon Season 2: Nightfall, so let’s hope you packed an extra pair of pants. Though with enough experience, that is to say trial and error, these threats won’t give you too much trouble.

These threats come in the form of Runner Shell zombies and hostile anomalies. The anomalies act as turrets that send out homing projectiles until you destroy them with any means necessary. And the zombies mindlessly run at you to rip you to pieces, and you’d better kill them from afar, as they explode when they die.

Thankfully, Runners will have access to several pieces of equipment to help them navigate and fight in the darkness of Narsh in Marathon Season 2: Nightfall. And if you’d like to find out more about how to survive Narsh, then stick around with us.

The Cradle

One of the more exciting additions of Marathon Season 2: Nightfall is the new Cradle system for your Runner Shells. The Cradle allows you to upgrade your Shell’s stats without having to grind one faction to get a specific upgrade. Luckily, you won’t have to think too hard about what you should upgrade, either, because you can refund your points for free.

Instead of gaining stats from factions, players can now scrap their unwanted items to gain experience for the Cradle. Of course, the better the item’s quality, the more experience you gain from throwing it into the Matter Converter. The Matter Converter is where you deposit your unwanted items to gain experience.

After you earn Cradle levels, you can then upgrade a variety of your Shell’s stats. In addition to these upgrades, hitting certain thresholds also grants you an extra perk for your Shell; think of it as an investment. Another thing that many players will like is that you can freely reorganize all of your Cradle levels however you’d like.

The Faction Progression and Contracts Improvements

The various factions in Marathon

Marathon Season 2: Nightfall introduces several improvements to faction progression and their contracts across the board. Bungie has made faction progression much easier to gain through various changes for every faction in the game. The changes to the progression system to make it easier are as follows:

  • Adjusted the exp requirements to level up each faction
  • Adjusted the amount of materials required to unlock faction upgrades
  • Standard Contracts grant significantly more faction reputation
  • Added new ways to earn reputation:
    • Added reputation gain to Enhanced (green) valuables
    • Added a small amount of reputation for defeating UESC

Contracts have also received changes in Marathon Season 2: Nightfall, and that includes every known contract in the game. Priority Contracts are getting their single run requirements toned down, so you can finally take that breath of relief. In addition, Priority Contracts grant more loot rewards rather than being hard requirements for reputation.

Priority Contracts are also no longer locked behind faction reputation, so thank god for that. Standard Contracts have gotten a few of their rough edges trimmed, in addition to the reputation gain increase. Liaison Contracts have also had their rough edges trimmed a bit, though most of us won’t be able to experience this.

The Ranked Improvements

Marathon Season 2: Nightfall also touches on the relatively smaller Ranked community with some Ranked improvements. One of the changes combines Low and High Stakes modes into a single queue with a minimum loadout cost of 5,000 credits. Runners must also now bring a Holotag that matches their current rank.

Bungie has also adjusted Ranked progression in Marathon Season 2: Nightfall. The Ranked progression changes in Season 2 are as follows:

  • Progression has been adjusted and should feel faster across all ranks.
  • Win/loss point progression will be influenced by the average rank of the players in that match compared to the player. If you play against people above your rank and lose, your loss won’t be as big. If you win against them, though, the earnings will be higher.
  • There is a new daily Ranked Sponsored Kit that contains a loadout appropriate for your rank—the higher your rank, the better the gear.
  • Players can earn Arachne reputation by exfiling with a Tag Chip.

The Quality of Life Updates

Marathon Season 2: Nightfall also comes with quite a few quality-of-life features for players on all platforms. I’ve kept you here for quite a while now, so I’ll rapid-fire these quality-of-life features. The quality-of-life features coming to Season 2 are as follows:

  • Increased Vault space: a fully upgraded Vault can now hold up to 512 grid spaces of items.
  • Added the ability to batch select items in your Vault.
  • Added a loot filter where if you select a slot you’re missing on your loadout, it’ll filter only the loot you can equip in that slot.
  • Simplified and streamlined the lobby UI so that you can get into a run faster and more intuitively. This change includes combining the Loadout and Vault menus.
  • Players can access select UI screens during matchmaking, including factions, the Codex, settings, and more.
  • Added new PC and console cursor speed settings.
  • Added new privacy settings with name obfuscation and a matchmaking timer offset.
  • Additional game security features to speed up detection of cheats and reduce their effectiveness.
  • Implemented a round of CPU performance improvements, as well as added support for frame generation on PC.
  • Improvements to our network technology to reduce disconnections, particularly for players outside the United States.

Is That All For The Contents Of Marathon Season 2: Nightfall?

Everything you see here is a summary for Marathon Season 2: Nightfall, so everything you need to know about Season 2 is here for you to read. However, I did leave out a few things to shorten it a bit, and yet it’s still quite the massive list. For example, I left out a few details for Sentinel and Narsh, but I’ll go into detail in a future article.

And if you’d like to read more about Sentinel and the new map, then you know where to look. Now, you only have a few days left before Season 1 ends, so get out there and progress as much as you can before the new Season drops!
