Marathon Season 2: Nightfall will arrive on June 2, 2026, bringing some features that fans have requested. Not only that, but Season 2 will also introduce several other features that might take a few of you by surprise. But what are these upcoming features, and what will they do for our beloved sci-fi extraction shooter?
Well, Marathon Season 2: Nightfall will introduce additions and changes that result from the teachings of the first Season. These changes and additions should enhance and expand the gameplay of Marathon, and who doesn’t love a buttery-smooth gameplay experience? So, let’s delve into the details of what’s to come in the second Season of Marathon.
What’s Coming In Marathon Season 2: Nightfall
Marathon Season 2: Nightfall is coming off the pan hot and ready with content for the community. The upcoming Season features new locations, Runner Shells, weapons, and much, much more. Let’s start with the contents that we’ll see the moment Season 2 releases on June 2, 2026, which is less than three weeks from now.
What We’ll See First
The New Runner Shell, Sentinel
With the release of Marathon Season 2: Nightfall, our beloved Runners will get a new shell to play with. This new shell is a defensive shell, according to Bungie, which could expand the defensive gameplay style further than Destroyer currently can. Unfortunately, the Shell type is all we have regarding this new shell, besides the image above.
The New Zone, Night Dire Marsh
New challenges await in the upcoming Season, and the first challenge Runners will face is a threat as old as time, the darkness. Night Dire Marsh makes an appearance in Marathon Season 2: Nightfall, presumably on release, though soon after release will suffice for the community. There have also been talks of new threats in the darkness, ooooh spooky.
The New Method of Acquiring Runner Shell Stats, The Cradle
Season 2 of Marathon will introduce a revamped method of acquiring Runner Shell stats, named the Cradle. Hopefully, the Cradle will provide a meaningful way to gain Shell stats compared to the click-and-hold method of upgrading everything. As usual, we’ll have to wait and see, and the wait won’t be torturously long, thankfully.
The New Adjustments For Progression
After a single round of the new Season, many players may notice that progression for your faction and Runner levels is different. And I mean that in a good way, as Bungie plans to increase the progression rate for both faction and Runner levels. However, by how much is unknown, though I highly doubt that it will be a meager +1 exp increase.
What We’ll See Later
As the days after the release of Marathon Season 2: Nightfall continue to progress, we’ll see more content from the new Season. Season 2 of Marathon features quite a few things after its initial release, so I’ll list out a few of them in quick succession. The features we’ll see later in the release of Marathon Season 2: Nightfall are as follows:
- A Duos rotating zone queue
- A new matchmaking system that helps players find better quality matches with more flex for higher-end players
- An expansion for the maximum size of your vault
- User experience improvements to help make setting goals and getting into a match smoother
- Two experimental modes towards the middle/latter half of the Season that test PVE-centered gameplay
- A possible third experimental mode that tests a purely PVP-focused mode
Unfortunately, these may seem vague at the moment, but we’ll receive more information after Season 2 releases. Thankfully, we won’t have to lounge around waiting for that content, because the initial release of Season 2 comes packed full of new content to try out. And if the rumors are true, then you may need to deal with a new threat in the darkness.

While complete information regarding the contents of Marathon Season 2: Nightfall is a bit vague at the moment, it’s still quite a lot to process. Marathon, and subsequently Bungie, is having a generational run with their communication and overall responsibility for this IP. Despite the vagueness, they have still revealed a boatload of what’s to come.
In fact, there’s plenty more that they revealed regarding Season 3 and, surprisingly, Season 4! However, I should reserve that for a separate occasion, as I wanted to talk about everything regarding Season 2 and its contents.
