Warner Bros just dropped the trailer for Mortal Kombat 2 on July 17. Naturally, Mortal Kombat fans and casual viewers have gone spiraling. And the internet has exploded with, “Wait… when is this thing coming out?”

So first, let’s start with the obvious: the release date is officially set for October 24, 2025. It was added to Warner Bros.’ 2025 film calendar back on May 15, 2024.

If you’re someone who got interested in the trailer and is wondering what this is, “Mortal Kombat,” then you’re at the right place. Originally launched in 1992, Mortal Kombat is a video game series. It was very bloody and brutal compared to other games at the time. And unsurprisingly, this small detail made the game extremely popular and controversial.

Since then, it has grown into one of the most famous video game franchises in the world. Later in 1995, Paul W. S. Anderson directed a fantasy martial arts movie based on it, Mortal Kombat. Making it Hollywood’s first major adaptation of a video game to work.

While it wasn’t critically acclaimed, fans devoured it and turned it into a cult classic. 26 years later, Mortal Kombat returned in 2021 with a reboot. This time, it had a darker tone, more violence, and better visual effects. Falling under the action-fantasy genre, the film tells the story of a young fighter who’s been chosen for a secret, ancient tournament.

The battle is between two realms: Earthrealm and Outworld. And the fate of the world depends on the results of this vicious, no-rules combat.

Our main character is apparently “chosen” to be a champion of Earth. To save his world, he teams up with other skilled fighters for training and preparation for the deadly battles.

The primary focus is heavily on martial arts and intense one-on-one fights. Although more violent than older versions, it was still rooted in the classic good vs. evil theme. Mortal Kombat 2 will reportedly pick up from its prequel’s ending.

Everything We Know About Mortal Kombat 2 From the Trailer

From the trailer, fans have already started to connect the dots. Here’s what we know: Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban, is the big addition this time. We see action scenes of him, accompanied by his signature sunglasses.

The trailer also confirms the return of fan-favorites Cole Young (Lewis Tan), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Jax (Mehcad Brooks), Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), and Raiden (Tadanobu Asano). A new cast of fighters is also seen, with Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford), Sindel (Ana Thu Nguyen), Jade (Tati Gabrielle), etc.

Lots of hints suggesting a clash between the Earthrealm and Outworld are shown. Something fascinating to see this time around would be the more polished and cinematic CGI.

The dates are totally locked in for Mortal Kombat 2 on October 24, 2025. We can only sit and wait patiently for the appetizing, gruesome meal. In the meantime, you can watch Mortal Kombat again to refresh your memory and be ready for the battle day.
