If you play high-graphics and action games, you might hear people asking what is FSR. A simple answer would be that it is the time of high-quality graphics games, and these video games demand a lot from your computer. Gamers want the games to be sharper and run smoothly, but not all players can afford the high-performance systems. And here, FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) comes into play.

It is developed by AMD to help improve gaming performance without sacrificing visuals. It provides gamers with a higher frame rate, which helps ensure smooth gaming without requiring a system upgrade.

What is FSR in General?

FSR or FidelityFX Super Resolution is a tool used in the gaming industry. AMD, a well-known tech company famous for its graphics cards and computer processors, designed the technology to help gamers or players have a better experience by running smooth games with a higher frame rate.

How does FSR Work in Video Games?

FSR helps in first lowering the refresh rate, which makes it less challenging for your computer, and then upgrading to a higher resolution by using smart tactics. The technology doesn’t need any fancy AI chips or a high-quality graphics card, unlike NVIDIA’s DLSS, which needs an RTX graphics card.

It also improves the clarity of the image by the technique called “edge sharpening”. It adds sharpness and reduces blurriness, so that the outcome looks close to the high-resolution game.

Features of FSR

It is clear from the above that the FidelityFX Super Resolution improves the visual experience in gaming. Here are the listed salient features:

  1. Improves Performance: The Technology helps in boosting the frame rates, resulting in better gaming.
  2. Works on Many GPUs: It is not limited to just AMD graphics cards. It also works with a wide range of GPUs.
  3. Easy for Developers: Game Developers can easily add FSR in games, which means more games can run with the best performance.
  4. Best visuals at low cost: Not everyone can afford the high-end gaming hardware, FSR helps to give high-quality gaming at a lower cost.

Versions of FSR

There are several versions of FSR. The FSR 1.0: FSR was released in June 2021. It works very fast. FSR 1.0 works on almost all GPUs. Perhaps the image quality is not perfect every time; it looked blurry and had visual noise, especially in motion games.

The second version of FidelityFX Super Resolution was released in May 2022 and uses motion data for the best quality. FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 looks for multiple frames that track the object moving on screen, which helps in providing the best result, which makes it slightly demanding to the graphics card.

In late 2023, FidelityFX Super Resolution 3.0 was revealed. FidelityFX Super Resolution 3.0 can add frames in between the actual ones, making gameplay smoother. The company is also working on the tool to make it compatible with more GPUs.

What Makes AMD’s FSR Different from NVIDIA’s DLSS

For starters, DLSS works with only NVIDIA RTX series GPUs (like RTX 2060, 3070, 4090, etc.) because it needs special AI cores, whereas FSR works with a wide range of GPUs.

Secondly, DLSS is ahead in quality, but FidelityFX Super Resolution is very close—and improving fast. Moreover, FSR is free to use for game developers, whereas DLSS is Proprietary to NVIDIA.

It is a useful modern gaming tool. No matter your level of competence, FidelityFX Super Resolution provides a fun gaming experience without requiring a costly graphics card.

So, next time you see FidelityFX Super Resolution in the settings of your game, give it a try; you might be surprised by the outcome in your gameplay.
