Tears of Metal, made by Paper Cult, was shown off during the Summer Games show in July 2024. While games like Dragon Ball Sparking and Dune Awakening came out, Tears of Metal was swept under the rug then.
However, some people have slowly been noticing it on Steam when going through recommendations while looking for new games. So, will Tears of Metal be as good as people think it is, or will it sink back down?
Tears of Metal’s Building Blocks

Tears of Metal is a roguelike hack-and-slash, which, to many, is a warm welcome to the gaming scene. Roguelike games seem to be coming less and less, with each year having fewer of them appearing in any store.
The hack-and-slash is an interesting twist, since most of them tend to involve shooting in some way or form. The idea of close range isn’t super new, but it’s often seen as an option rather than being forced.
We know a tiny bit of gameplay, some from some clips of my own, as well as YouTube, thankfully. There isn’t a lot, but there’s enough to have a clear difference between Tears of Metal and other roguelikes.
First gameplay is unlockables, as you can’t have a roguelike without unlockables, like characters and spells that you can earn. These will be unlocked from achievements like killing enough enemies to defeating some bosses, or maybe even challenge runs.
We also know that the game will be played in third person, which is a bit more uncommon in roguelikes. Most tend to go towards a top-down view with a HUD, but Tears of Metal has 3D gameplay instead.
It takes a little inspiration from games like Inscryption, with the roguelike map being a route that needs planning. This direction seems to be agreed on as a great idea, as some games without it tend to get bland.
The theme is also strange, as it’s based on Scottish weapons and fighting techniques, with some spells included. Some aren’t magic-based, like having a wave of arrows shoot out, while some are, like breathing fire without alcohol.
Finally, one part that most people are excited for is that it comes with both couch coop and online coop on launch. Groups that buy on day one just need to wait for the download to complete before they can play together.
These gameplay directions are not common, but most, if not all, fans agree that these are great things to have. The game isn’t out yet, but it plans on releasing during 2025, so the wait isn’t long!
