The new CS2 Trade Up update has just been released, altering a major part of cosmetics. On any other day, it would go unnoticed by the majority of the community. However, this one stood out to players with a trained eye. The update also introduces a new game mode, along with adjustments to maps for better visibility.
Valve has, in its most recent update, changed the functionality of the Trade Up Contract in a very peculiar manner. This change, though seemingly unremarkable, has majorly affected the market by making knives and gloves craftable in CS2. This change may spell irreparable disaster for people who have invested heavily in CS skins.
What Is The CS2 Trade Up Update?

The recent CS2 Trade Up update extended the Trade Up Contract‘s functionality by allowing players to make exchanges. Players can now exchange five standard or StatTrak Covert items for a standard or StatTrak knife or glove. Although this may seem insignificant to those outside of the CS community, it is quite the opposite.
For those who financially invest in CS, this may massively devalue their entire inventory. The inventory of many of these players consists of knives and gloves. Not only that, but the majority of the market consists of knives and gloves.
Consequently, this means that the recent changes significantly redirect the value of the best sellers to other items. Thus, spooking a considerable portion of the playerbase into panic selling and buying. Therefore, it further depreciates the value of knives and gloves than when the changes began.
For example, an item, AK47 | Legion of Anubis, which costs approximately 7.54 USD, has risen to around 40 USD. Similarly, a knife called Gut Knife | Doppler, which costs approximately 305.42 USD, has plummeted to 146.85 USD. Despite these changes taking effect less than a day ago, it’s already plunged the CS marketplace into chaos.
How Will The Latest CS2 Trade Up Update Changes Affect The Market Future?
If the market follows this downward trend, then the amount of Covert items in the market will dry up in the coming months. This will spur the value of the Covert items even higher, while gloves and knives rise in value again. Thankfully, there may be a light that shines through these seemingly dark times.
In the long run, the value of Covert items, knives, and gloves will stabilize, and the monopoly held by knives and gloves will be broken. Optimistically, the value of items will be redistributed throughout all tiers of items, with less weightage on knives and gloves. But we’ll just have to wait and see.
