On June 17, 2025, Arrowhead Game Studios issued a new cape in Helldivers. It’s named Protector of the Heart. This is due to all Helldivers celebrating the victory of one of the most important events in Helldivers 2 history. It also represents the Helldivers’ persistence through insurmountable odds.

The odds that no one has ever seen before, little did we know that this would go down in Helldivers 2 history, The Illuminate Invasion of Super Earth.

The new cape in Helldivers 2 commemorates the successful defense of Super Earth from the invasion of the Illuminate Great Host Fleet. The invasion began on June 13, 2025, when Super Earth satellites detected a strange anomaly. It originated from the Meridia Black Hole, and the brave Helldivers had stopped weeks prior.

The anomaly turned out to be a new threat, the Illuminate Great Host Fleet, an impressive armada of ships that emerged from the Meridian Black Hole, hellbent on destroying our way of life. The fleet staged an attack on the lunar surface of Widow’s Harbor, a planet hosting the Singularity Party in celebration of the Helldivers’ success in stopping the Meridia Black Hole, where the Helldivers swiftly engaged the new enemy fleet.

Days of fighting raged on as the Helldivers fought to either defend Widow’s Harbor or at least reduce the enemy numbers before they inevitably entered Super Earth space. Regrettably, the new forces of the Illuminate were too great, forcing the Helldivers to retreat to the next set of planets, serving as an initial barrier for the Illuminate Great Host before they reached Super Earth.

Mere moments later, the Great Host attacked the arid deserts of Pilen V, which forced the Helldivers to fight in scalding deserts raging with fierce sandstorms. Unfortunately, after more days of intense combat, Pilen V shared the same fate as Widow’s Harbor, leaving only New Haven as Super Earth’s last line of defense.

As the Great Host besieged Super Earth’s final line of defense, the Helldivers heroically fought on the eternally dark jungles of New Haven. Despite the exhaustion, and knew full well that the loss of New Haven was unavoidable.

On June 20, 2025, after a week of continued resistance from the Helldivers, the planet’s acting barrier to Super Earth fell. However, it didn’t fail its purpose, as the Illuminate Great Host Fleet was reduced by 21.5%. Although the result may seem insignificant, it played a critical part in repelling the Invasion of Super Earth.

Finally reaching their intended destination, the Illuminate Great Host Fleet plans on destroying our home world of Super Earth and everything we stand for. Immediately upon the Illuminate’s arrival, the Helldivers dove into the streets of Super Earth’s sprawling mega-cities, fighting alongside the SEAF (Super Earth Armed Forces) in the roads and alleyways that many call home.

Seven mega-cities stood tall when the invasion began: Eagleopolis, Administrative Center 02, Remembrance, York Supreme, Port Mercy, Prosperity City, and Equality On Sea. The Illuminate fleet invaded each mega-city one by one, set on destroying freedom itself.

As the battle raged on, cities were lost, but not without severely damaging the Illuminate fleet. Each city destroyed by the Illuminates came at an extreme cost for their fleet, thanks to the Helldivers with the help of SEAF.

Blows were traded back and forth by Helldivers and Illuminates alike, leaving Super Earth with only two mega-cities left to defend before its defeat. But when all seemed lost, the DSS (Democracy Space Station) was fully repaired, thanks to the Helldivers on the Automaton front, and was deployed to Super Earth for immediate activation.

Illuminate forces were decimated by the Helldivers, with the help of the DSS, quickly turning the tables around and leaving Super Earth in the lead. Hope quickly began to rise, driving everyone to keep on fighting, Helldivers and SEAF whittling down the Great Host Fleet to its very last life.

Once the last remaining Illuminate forces were quickly disposed of, Super Earth was officially saved, and citizens stood tall knowing who their heroes were. Thus, the new cap in Helldivers 2 commemorates the defense of Super Earth and the boundless gratitude of all citizens for the Helldivers.
