In recent news, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is censored in Japan as stated by the country’s Rating Board. It has a CERO Z rating which allows the game’s scenes or the game’s storyline to be suitable only for adults.

After a long waiting period, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is finally releasing on March 20, 2025. The upcoming title is the fourteenth major installment of the Assassin’s Creed series and a sequel to last year’s Mirage. The game will come out on platforms like PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, MacOS, iPad OS, and PC.

Ubisoft Faces Backlash as Assassin’s Creed Shadows is Censored by Japan Rating Board

After the announcement of the release date of Assassin’s Creed Shadows Ubisoft Japan opened its mouth about the game containing extreme blood and gore. They stated it was unsuitable for minor players to enjoy the gaming experience of Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Apart from the blood and gore it also includes the portrayal of some Japanese voices rendered in the overseas versions. Ubisoft Japan will be changing that.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is CERO: Z due to its action being too vulgar and brutal making it unfit for minors. What makes the game feel more brutal is the sight of amputating the neck and arms of enemies. Additionally, the turn on/off button for reducing or enhancing violence and gore will be removed in the Japanese version.

Many audios will see replacements from the game’s Japanese edition. This is because to the license rights for musical bits are no longer in play.

One of the game’s main characters, Yusuke is also facing questions from the gaming society. Many claim it not to be the perfect portrayal of its historical identity. However, Ubisoft counters this by saying that “they are an entertainment-centric company and they refrain from putting up to display any specific agenda”.

One can see various changes in the Japanese version, including the replacement of the game’s original soundtrack.
