The Binding of Isaac’s Story of Sins

The Binding of Isaac wasn’t normally a game you could buy, but rather a flash game when it was made. While flash games being made into real games isn’t unheard of, it was made into a real game in September 2011.

The game has many ties to Christianity, with the characters and monsters being named after those found in the bible. Considering that it’s a rogue-like, how does this hold up, and why do people love the game’s art and lore?

The Binding of Isaac seems to confuse people who find the game for the first time and look into it. How does Christianity fit into a game of a child fighting through their basement full of monsters by using tears?

The main character, who is also the starter is Isaac, a young child who is being hunted by his mother. You think that it’s because they did something wrong, but it’s because the three Spirits told her to kill them.

That’s a reference to the real Binding of Isaac, where Isaac’s father is told to sacrifice him on Mount Moriah. However, this time, it doesn’t seem to hint towards Jesus; instead, it’s because Isaac is full of too much sin.

How is a young child full of so much sin, despite being stripped of all things that can cause sin? We don’t know, but it seems that she is dead set on following the orders given to her this time.

This gives Isaac only one option: run down into the basement to stay safe from their own mother. This seems smart until beasts and monsters come out, attacking in every room they enter as they traverse the basement.

They travel farther and farther down, the basement turning to a cave, then into a flesh-covered area, cries ringing out. With no other option, Isaac continues until the last room, and inside holds the heart of his mother.

The heart attacks still, and after the fight, a chest falls, and Isaac enters the chest and locks it. The last moments of the child, slowly suffocating and dying, until it restarts over and over again, with no end.

After enough playing, it turns out the mother is a devil herself, sent to kill Isaac as punishment for eternity. Isaac turns into an angel after truly dying and kills their mother, ending everything, freeing their soul, and passing on.

The game is confusing and requires a large amount of time to beat fully, and there are mods as well. The story is hidden deep in the game with all its unlocks, so if you consider getting it, look for the lore.
